Videorific

(If you do not see a video window above this text you may need to install the latest version of macromedia flash)
Here's the first video of Nora. One Week old...sorry about the bad color quality. My video camera doesn't auto-adjust color very well and compression compounds the problem (I can give you a technical explanation of compression resampling if you really want it).

Well my goodness! She really is one fine lookin' baby! You'd almost think she was a C-section baby. Congratulations on welcoming a beautiful new Johnson into the world!

And yes, Justin...I would very much like a technical explanation of compression resampling...

Video compression works by analyzing square blocks of pixels called "macroblocks." The macroblocks are compared from one frame to the next and the differences between the blocks is sent. This works well for still video but suffers for video where there is lots of motion.

Video is saved as a three-dimensional array: height, width and time. Each frame (or time dimension) is a single image, like a jpeg. Data is "spatial-encoded" so that small color differences are averaged out (resampled) into a single color, thus saving space.

Different compression algorithms excel at different things. For example, youtube compression is apparently designed for speed because the quality suffers a lot. If you want your videos to look as good as possible online, you should compress them for quality before upload so the online service spends less time compressing them. Also, the more times in a row that something is compressed, the worse the quality.

I captured this video at full resolution. Edited the clips I wanted together using Windows Movie Maker and saved a compressed version for broadband. I'm not sure if the video posting service compressed it further but if they did it wasn't much.

-happy? :)

I can't view the video at work as I can't access UTube here so I can't wait to see the video at home tonight. Since I know you well.....I know you didn't cut and paste your video compression information off of a technical site like I would have done. :)

Any ideas for why a video doesn't show up on my computer? By the way, I got my new computer today to go with my new monitor at work. It's cool. You would probably think it's junk, but compared to what I used to have, it's SWEET (and fast). Can't wait to see Nora...not seeing the video is KILLING me.

The video is great. I can't believe you got a picture of her smiling! And watching the computer like she really knows what's going on. What a geek already! :) Can't wait to see her again....

That was TOO FUNNY! :) I seriously laughed out loud when Justin was teaching her the computer language. Thanks for sharing!

Since I had just gotten my new computer, I didn't have flash downloaded yet. That video is SO CUTE. I had Brooklyn watch it before she went to daycare this morning and she got all excited! probably thought it was her :)
Can't wait to see you all this weekend.

What a sweet video! She looks quite happy with the parents she got. :) And Justin is obviously now numbered among other Daddy's who instantly got wrapped around that teeny tiny little finger of a daughter. :) She'll probably know more about computers by the time she is two than I know at 30, if she keeps hanging out with Daddy. :)Can't wait to see her in person some day!

Hey Little Johnson Family,

Kate has been forwarding pix and now the video to me. Good grief, Nora is absolutely perfect. Aren't you so glad she picked you to be her parents?!?! And isn't it amazing the new plane of love you have discovered? I cannot wait to get home and snuggle and kiss her little baby head. Did you get my goofy text poem? Much love, hugs and kisses to you all, Kath, Kate's mom.
